49. Mas de Daumas Gassac 1995 / 1996, Vin de Pays de I'Herault € 65

This estate is considered to be the "Grand Cru" of the South of France even though its first wine was produced as recently as 1978. The character of the wine is owed to the very fine reddish-pink soil, whereas the wine's quality is due to the "nothing but the best" standards of Aimé Guibert, the estate's proprietor.. Excellent balance and concentration! This wine shows the quality that can be achieved by an estate without the use of pesticides or fertilisers.

204. Chateau Clerc Milon 1996 Pauillac 5eme Cru Classe en 1855€ 85

Acquired in 1970, this estate is owned by Baroness Philippine Rothschild and is situated beside both Chateaux Mouton Rothschild and Lafite Rothschild. The style of wine is less austere and more voluptuous than is typical of Pauillac , however it is still showing the dark fruit and cedarwood character, this is particularly due to the higher proportion of Merlot (37%) in the final blend. The vintage's richness combined with the balanced structure allow this wine to be enjoyed at it's very zenith now.

The palate flavours are mouth filling, with strong flavours of plum, spice and black pepper, followed by layers of stewed fruit and liquorice on the back palate and just a hint of earth. Perfect balance, with fine-grained tannins. Velvet smooth. Very long aftertaste of plum, spice, vanilla, black pepper and liquorice.

179.Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1994, Pauillac€ 250

The philosophy of this famous estate and the style of the wine produced here were the creation of one of the most flamboyant and passionate Chateau proprietors Bordeaux has seen. The late Baron Philippe de Rothschild inherited the estate at the age of twenty-one. At the time, Mouton was not a First Growth but a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification. In 1973, the Baron finally achieved First Growth Status for the property. The 1994 wine is robed in a deep, intense ruby colour and exhibits a character of black fruits, toasted bread and smoky spice held by a full structure that is very typical of Pauillac wines.
